Busy lil week in review (Friday March 9, 2007)

Hey folks. Here are some highlights from this week:

- I went to Cambridge to check out Pasifika Styles, a pretty cool exhibition of contemporary Polynesian art;
- I watched
something sexy (and sort of goofy) on YouTube;
- I found a lonely
tiki in Hackney;
- I took some pics at
Fragmented Portraits, an exhibition at Cosa in Notting Hill;
- I posted some sketches of and quotes by
one of the most obnoxious people I've ever come across.

... all that, plus a week's worth of London Daily Photos, more news about Easter Island than anyone will ever read, and lots of other goodies just for you!

Have a great weekend,
Tiki Chris

Below is information about four blogs that I administer:
ontoLondon, ontoTravel, Rapa Nui News, and Tiki Chris. Each Friday, I hope to provide a weekly review of what I've posted. If a particular blog interests you, keep in mind that I’ve been blogging since well before this past week. You may want to take a look through the archives of any blog that interests you. Thanks.

Pasifika Styles in Cambridge

Pasifika Styles
5 February 2006 - February 2008
University of Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
Downing Street
Cambridge CB2 3DZ

Seemingly in response to the recent Polynesian exhibitions at the British Museum and UEA's Sainsbury Centre, Pasifika Styles at the University of Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology "unites the new wave of contemporary Pacific art and culture with extraordinary historical collections." From the culturally accepted to the provocatively unexpected, Pasifika Styles fuses contemporary style and technological innovation with ancient traditions.

As a long time admirer of Polynesian Pop, I found this showcase of "New Zealand's top contemporary and emerging artists" to be a refreshing examination of the relationship between global pop culture and traditional Polynesian culture. Of course, this collection is decidely more Pop Polynesian than Polynesian Pop.

The exhibition is free to the public and at the museum for another year. So, in one sense there's plenty of time to catch it. However, the museum is only open Tuesday to Saturday, 2:00pm to 4:30pm - so time your visit well! I recommend allowing 45 minutes to an hour to enjoy the exhibition and the rest of the museum at a leisurely pace. A good way to plan your visit might be to check out the events page of the exhibition's website, which mentions a week long festival for May of this year.

Turkey bans YouTube

In the future, robots will have more rights than Turks.

Turkish court bans YouTube access
Access to the popular video-sharing website YouTube has been suspended in Turkey following a court order.
BBC News
Last Updated: Wednesday, 7 March 2007, 15:04 GMT

The ban was imposed after prosecutors told the court that clips insulting former Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk had appeared on the site ... According to Turkish media, there has been a "virtual war" between Greek and Turkish users of the site, with both sides posting insulting videos.

See below for some clips (that I presume are) in question. The first one is titled "WE TURKS ARE BEST." The other, well, I'd rather not repeat its title (but it's set to the song This is How We Do by The Game featuring Fifty Cent).

Equal rights for robots

This takes the fun out of everything! What good are robots if you can't abuse them?

Robotic age poses ethical dilemma
An ethical code to prevent humans abusing robots, and vice versa, is being drawn up by South Korea.
BBC News
Last Updated: Wednesday, 7 March 2007, 13:46 GMT

The Robot Ethics Charter will cover standards for users and manufacturers and will be released later in 2007.

Crack cocaine and foie gras amazingly similar!

In the late 1980s, Jeff Henderson was making $35,000 a week as a major drug dealer in San Diego. He got busted, went to prison and wound up washing dishes on kitchen duty ... After his release ... his skills making crack cocaine helped him master fussy French recipes such as foie gras.

We need to introduce legislation mandating that politicians wear Nascar-style suits when in office. We need to know exactly who is lobbying these people at all times. Either that or just go ahead and put the corporate logos directly on the ballots, don't even worry about the candidate's name, that doesn't matter.

BBC gets wise to YouTube and the future

Finally, a major network/content owner sees the benefit of working with YouTube and the futility of resisting the inevitable!

- YouTube content to include two BBC-branded entertainment channels showing short-form videos
- Dedicated channel for BBC News clips also to be featured on YouTube

"It's essential that the BBC embraces new ways of reaching wider audiences with non-exclusive partnerships such as these."

BBC's director of future media and technology, Ashley Highfield, said the company would not run after BBC-copyrighted clips already posted by YouTube members although it has the option to change bad-quality clips or remove content that maligns the BBC name ... "We don't want to be overzealous," Highfield said. "A lot of the material on YouTube is good promotional content for us."
