Tiki Chris Week in Review (Friday July 27, 2007)

Very cool happenings to report this week. Juxtapoz posted an interview I conducted with London artist Paul Insect as well as my photos from the opening of his recent show and from the opening of Found, a group show featuring plenty of great artists such as Sweet Toof and Cyclops.

And while I'm on the subject of great artists ...

I posted a call for artists for my upcoming
Halloween Skull Mask Project. I've already received a few images from some contributing artists. The results are killer!

I also got around to reviewing Journey to the Center of the Earth by Tallahassee surf band,
the Intoxicators!

Don't forget to
take a gander at this month's by photographer Marta Alabau over at ontoLondon.

Have a great weekend,
Tiki Chris

New Music Showcase: The Intoxicators!

One of the many highlights of attending this year's Hukilau was getting to catch a few performances by Tallahasee surf band, the Intoxicators! Here's a review of their 13-track CD, Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a good mix of well executed surf tunes - classic and new, live and studio recorded. Almost as fun as listening to the CD is imaging the improbable images that the songs' titles suggest: "Prostitutes in a Clown Car," "The Claw End of the Hammer of the Gods," and "Tijuana Catfight" are a few examples.

My favorite song on Journey is the slowed down, atmospheric "Phantom Mustang" which would be the perfect song for any teenage male finding himself in the following situation: in the backseat of his daddy's '57 Chevy, necking with the girl of his dreams who has bubblegum breath and wears a fuzzy pink sweater and a skirt with a poodle on it. Yeah, the song's that good.

Of course, even better than listening to the CD is watching these boys live. They're tight.

Call for Artists: Halloween Skull Mask Project

Call for Artists: Halloween Skull Mask Project

For each day during this year's 31 Days of Halloween Madness, this blog will feature a custom skull mask designed by a different artist. The idea is simple: 31 artists take the same basic skull image and customize it. Then from the 1st through the 31st of October, one customized image will be posted per day. Contributing artists will be credited along with a link to their websites and a brief sentence or two about them.

The only requirements are as follows:

1) The outline of the mask is not to be altered,
2) The dotted line and punch holes are to remain visible, and
3) The dimensions of the image are to remain the same as the original JPEG.

Deadline for submission is September 1, 2007.

Interested in contributing?
Contact Tiki Chris by August 1, 2007 for more info and to receive your skull mask template.

And then of course, there are all those brilliant that photographer
Marta Alabau has been providing to ontoLondon this month.

Anyway, I'm off to Bristol with my camera to check out the Invisible Art Club exhibition. Catch ya later.

Artist Profile: Tiki Racer

A heady cocktail of lowbrow exotica Tiki hotrod art rooted in a love of toys, films, music and fashion from the fifties and sixties

Yep, that's Tiki Racer, an artist with whom regular readers of this blog should be quite familiar. He helped make
Zombruary 2007 more interesting and put a ton of thought and elbow grease into the Tiki London project. In fact, content about, by or because of Tiki Racer has at times been integral to this blog ... which is a good thing because I really like his art.

He's prolific too, and that impresses me. From designing the
logo and menu (and even mugs) for one of London's hottest night clubs to dabbling in lino, TR seems to have the uncanny sense of getting his head round just about any new medium he decides to tinker with.

D*Face Interview for whitehot

Chris Osburn interviews D*Face
by Chris Osburn
whitehot magazine of contemporary art
July 2007

A spot had been spied, and the only way to hit it was around the outside of a stairwell that had steel bars, in a cage-like structure covering it. To get to the spot, you had to shimmy along the outer railings which overhung the frozen canal, then up a few flights of stairs. Fine on the way up, but coming back down with paste-covered frozen hands was another story. Climbing around and along the railings, each shimmy made my hands slip further and further downwards to the point I was hunched up in a near ball-like posture and had to take a leap of faith for the canal wall.

Tiki Chris Week in Review (Friday July 6, 2007)

Big thanks to Marta Alabau for supplying ontoLondon with all of this month's . I've been a fan of her photography for awhile and was really pleased when she agreed to contribute! Her shots are great - give 'em a look!

And speaking of ontoLondon's contributing photographers, many of last month's , such as this cool shot, were taken by my old buddy Pint Champion during his recent trip here.

So while those cats were filling in here on the homefront, I slipped out and had some photo fun in the .

Have a great weekend,

7-Eleven Transformed into Simpsons-Style Kwik-E-Mart

News of 7-Elevens transforming into Kwik-E-Marts across America seemed just the thing to post about on the 4th of July.

I was a little disappointed to see Bart & Milhouse flanking the Kwik-E-Mart logo, it kind of took away from any authenticity, but it’s a silly quibble, really. They did a better and more thorough job than I was expecting.

Me and My New Theremin!

Say hello to my newest toy - the Moog Etherwave Theremin! I bought this baby second hand from Theremin maestro Virani when he was in town for the London Luau. Why'd he give it up? He moved on to a bigger better model of this electronic musical instrument that's meant to be played without being touched.

I'm progressing slowly and haven't had much time to practice, but it seems rather intuitive to play. My main problem is hitting notes based on feel and sound alone. I'm so used to relying on my eyes to find notes on piano and guitar.

Anyway, until I get a lot better at playing this wonderful contraption, enjoy the maestro's version of one of my all time favorite songs:
