5 Good Reasons ... to be happy!

Prone to get the blues?

One little trick I've developed to combat the blues is to make a mental list of five things that - right off the top of my head - make me happy. Nothing too profound, just the first few positive things that occur to me. I find that this technique usually picks me up and results in my realizing a long list of other happy thoughts.

I was thinking that my 'five good reasons' idea might make a cool model for a blog - a platform for folks to list and share happy things with others.

Anti-Fascism Fantasy

I finally got around to seeing Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, and, boy, am I glad I did! Shadowy and grotesque, poignant and alluring - this fairytale, set during the end of the Spanish Civil War, warns of what may happen when nature and virtue become relegated to the shadows.

























Pan's Labyrinth tells the story of Ofelia, a little girl, who - under the weight of tremendous emotional burden - retreats to a fantasy world of fairies and monsters. Perhaps her retreat is an escape from reality or - possibly - it's the only way she has to process the turbulent upheavel in her life. Played by the gifted twelve-year old Ivana Baquero, Ofelia is the embodiment of sympathy. Her fantasy world exists behind the walls and beneath the floorboards of an old, creaky house.

Was this behind the scenes fantasy world a nod to CS Lewis? Maybe if Lewis had been raised Catholic and resentful of that fact. Another obvious connection would be to Lewis Carroll's Alice, if only Carroll had grown up listening to Slayer. This is not a cutesy movie. Humankind's capacity for cruelty is held to the light for full examination.

Maribel Verdú (who also played Luisa in Y Tu Mamá También) is brilliant as Mercedes, Ofelia's bastion of hope and mercy.

I could go on. However, I think it better to direct you to a recent interview with director Del Toro on the radio show Fresh Air. Click here to access that interview, in which Del Toro explains how he came to take monsters into his heart at an early age.

New Music Showcase: Ash Valley

For my first New Music Showcase post, I've chosen Castle in the Clouds by Ash Valley, a band from my hometown of Chickamauga. And, I'm happy to report that it's really, really good!













In the spirit of Hank Williams’ "A Mansion on the Hill," Castle in the Clouds deals with the “struggles of downcast valley folk.” Ash Valley vocalist/lyricist Andy Ampersand explains:

I grew up the son of blue-collar workers and have always been acutely aware of the brilliant metaphor inherent in the fact that the wealthy live in lofty mansions that overlook the plebeians down in the mournful, laboring valley.

Andy's conceptual valley provides ample opportunity for him to wax metaphorical. The album's 10 songs are a series of character sketches of individuals who have “lost their faith and hope and have fallen into spiritual/emotional valleys of despair.” However, all is not lost. The title song closes the album with the possibility of "triumph over seemingly-insurmountable circumstances."

Sounds like a John Edwards speech? Kinda. Fortunately, as "mournful and laboring" as Ampersand's lyrical downs may be, a mountain of music rises above to inspire. Elements of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy are happily noted as well as Bruce Springsteen's folkier side. Each song is sincere and catchy - pleasant to play with plenty of aural texture should listeners decide to dig a little deeper. Castle in the Clouds steadily moves from song to song while retaining a dynamic intensity.

For all its blue collar/Appalachian positioning, listening to Castle in the Clouds elicits the same response as a lot of British pop. This is fuzzy sweater music. Electronic bleeps and blips weave in and out of an otherwise acoustic landscape. I'm reminded of ear candy classics by the Cure and of kooky Welsh bands from the Nineties - just a little less quirky and a bit more earnest. As incongruous as this blend may seem to imagine, it works.

The ideal cover art for the next Ash Valley album? Think Howard Finster meets Pete Fowler.

The renewed interest in this fifty-year-old album has had Drasnin excited to create new Exotica works. Ever since that performance in Florida, Mr. Drasnin has been hard at work writing a new album of Exotica: Voodoo 2. So many of the Exotica greats have gone on to that great luau in the sky; the idea of a new album of true classic Exotica is something many of us wouldn’t have even dreamed would be possible.

Re-issued on CD by Dionysus during the recent Exotica revivalist movement, exposure to the original Voodoo by a new generation has resulted in overwhelming demand for more. After a unanimously enthusiastic response to a live performance in 2005, Mr. Drasnin was delighted at the opportunity to go back into the studio to create a follow-up to his singular masterpiece, almost five decades later. Although the record will be relased by Dionysus Records in Spring of 2007, the recording is being paid for out of Mr. Drasnin's own pocket.

Hawaiian War Chant in Norwich Union commercial

This weekend I happened to catch a commercial for Norwich Union featuring a really silly version of the classic hapa haole hit, Hawaiian War Chant.


There are actually two commercials which feature the song (one for home insurance and one for car insurance). For the time being, the commercials may be viewed at NU's website.

Artist Profile: C. Michael Frey

Artist Profile: C. Michael Frey

This month’s profiled artist is C. Michael Frey, whom I have had the pleasure of knowing for more than a decade. We met at the University of Georgia, where Michael received his BFA in Drawing and Painting. I remember how impressed I was with his focused dedication to painting, during a time when so many around him hadn’t a clue what to do with the rest of their lives.

After uni, Michael moved to New York to pursue a career in the arts. As a digital artist and creative consultant in commercial and fashion photography, he began to see “how the images we ingest in advertising and magazines are far from accurate depictions of reality,” with the concept of what is attractive becoming “increasingly narrow.”
























A culturally-loaded combination of iconic imagery and overt sexuality, his paintings explore the media’s impact on identity and subculture, how the concept of identity in modern society relates to the commercialization of the individual, and why individuals are attracted to specific social roles and subcultures.




















Michael currently resides in Los Angeles, California, where he also creates little penguin paintings:

South Seas Cinema: Tabu, a Story of the South Seas

Welcome to South Seas Cinema, a new series of posts about films set in – or pertaining to – Polynesia and the South Pacific.

Tabu, a Story of the South Seas (1931)

For my first review, I’ve chosen one of my absolute favourite films: Tabu, a Story of the South Seas. If you haven’t seen this classic film directed by anthropologist documentary-maker Robert J. Flaherty (Nanook of the North) and German expressionist F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu), then make viewing it a priority. And, if you ever get a chance to see Tabu on the big screen, by all means go!

Shot entirely on location in Bora Bora in the 1920s, Tabu, a Story of the South Seas is one of the most visually compelling films I've had the pleasure to view. In fact, cinematographer Floyd Crosby won an Academy Award for its cinematography. At slightly more than 80 minutes, this poignant black and white, silent film engrossed me and left me longing for more.

Tabu tells the story of two young lovers that are mad about each other, but society just won't let them be. Yes, very Romeo and Juliet ... but set during the late 1920's ... in Tahiti ... with a completely Tahitian cast. All of which makes for some very endearing acting in a movie where everybody's gorgeous and the scenery is breathtaking.

The tragic story still haunts my imagination (I viewed it for the second time over a month ago) - I mean, I’m really not one for love stories, but this one really gets to me. For what it's worth, the film has been deemed "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Tabu was restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and has been released on DVD by Milestone Films.

I hope I'm not opening any floodgates, but I want to put the word out that I am currently seeking original music to review. Ideally, I would like to review one album/band per month.

I listen to all sorts of music and am open to any genre of music. So, as long as your music is good, I'll give it a proper listen.

My hope is to use the monthly reviews to showcase up-and-coming musicians and not to show off how pathetically hip I think I am.

Similarly, I am open to guest writers submitting reviews to be published on this blog.

2007: So far so good (Friday January 5, 2007)

Happy New Year!

Now back in London after a merry Christmas in Chickamauga, I find myself reflecting on how interesting 2006 was for me. In fact, that last week of last year - with its fundamentalist florists, turkey tombstones, mentally impaired moai, quirky architecture, and yummy down home cooking - sums up much of why 2006 was such an intriguing time for me as a writer and photographer.

2007 promises to be just as fun, and I already have plenty of ideas for the Tiki Chris blogs. For example, the ontoLondon Weekly Photo is now the ontoLondon Daily Photo. I also have more series-style posts (such as the 31 Days of Halloween Madness) in mind.

Chatta-Googie and Mid South Modern

4B (Big Bland Beige Box) architecture hasn't completely taken over Chattanooga, Tennessee, but it's fast encroaching upon some of my favorite buildings in this scenic city. So, before it does, I thought I'd share some photos I recently took of Googie and mid century modern signage and architecture in the Chattanooga area. However, please note that this is just a small sampling of Chattanooga's quirky urban landscape, which (I'm sad to report) was even quirkier about 5 years ago. Enjoy it while you can.
