Tiki London: Gerry's Wine and Spirits

For our upcoming Tiki London limited edition print, Tiki Racer and I came up with a list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks. Next on our list (in alphabetical order) is the Gerry's Wine and Spirits.

"At Gerry's ... you can buy almost any drink under the sun!" Stroll by Gerry's shopfront window next time you're in Soho and drool at their selection of rum. Best place for Tiki drink supplies in London.

Check back soon for the next in our list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks and for more details about the Tiki London limited edition print.

Meet Up with Cyclops and Sweet Toof (Juxtapoz)

Meet Up with Cyclops and Sweet Toof
by Chris Osburn
for Juxtapoz
Thursday, 31 May 2007

Curiosity and vanity getting the best of me, I agreed to the meet up. We convened near an over ground train station, Cyclops lugging a beat up ladder and Sweet Toof pulling a pregnant, paint splattered shopping trolley. After a brief hello, we trekked over to a nearby water tower in a derelict, overgrown lot beside a canal. According to Sweet Toof, the roughly 30 foot tall tank had been "asking for a lick of paint for a long time."

Tiki London: Cuming Museum

For our upcoming Tiki London limited edition print,
Tiki Racer and I came up with a list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks. Next on our list (in alphabetical order) is the Cuming Museum.

The little known Cuming Museum, located in South London, is home to a number of objects brought to England on the three Pacific voyages of Captain Cook. Tikis, Hawaiian feather cloaks and more - along with the rest of the Cuming's exotic and arcane collections - make this small museum an excellent off-the-beaten-path destination.

Tiki London: British Museum

For our upcoming Tiki London limited edition print,
Tiki Racer and I came up with a list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks. Next on our list (in alphabetical order) is the British Museum.

Why the British Museum? Well, with 45,000 Polynesian artefacts on premise, including the below pictured moai Hoa Hakananai'a and the Picasso-inspiring A'a, the British Museum is a perfect place to check out the real McCoys that influenced Polynesian Pop and Tiki style.

Tiki London: Black Pearl Boutique

For our upcoming Tiki London limited edition print, Tiki Racer and I came up with a list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks. First on the list (in alphabetical order) is Black Pearl Boutique.

Black Pearl Boutique at Kingly Court (just off Carnaby Street) is a haven of rockabilly jewellery, vintage 1950’s clothing, burlesque corsets, and accessories, providing Tiki enthusiasts with a Polynesian oasis of tropical décor in the middle of central London’s retail jungle. Upon first entering Black Pearl, shoppers are whisked away to a tropic isle via the shop’s “Polynesian Tiki style,” which, according to Owner Fiona Deffenbaugh, “evokes the spirit of 1950s Tiki bars,” and sets it apart from the multitude of shops around Carnaby Street.

Coming Soon: Tiki London

With the London Luau coming up in mid June, Tiki Racer and I thought it would be a worthwhile endeavour to research and document some of London's Tiki landmarks for ourselves.

Blazing through this urban jungle, mingling with its restless natives, and diligently making copious notes of our explorations and discoveries, we were able to plot and map our course, resulting in the upcoming limited edition print: Tiki London.

Over the next several days, we'll use the Tiki Chris blog to point out some of the highlights of London's Tiki landscape. Make sure to check back for more details about our Tiki London project as well as for images from our limited edition print. Until then, here's a teeny weeny sneak peek:

Blogger Meet-Up at Trailer Happiness

It was a dark and stormy night ... No, actually, it was a pleasant sunny late afternoon when I met up with a few other bloggers at Notting Hill's Trailer Happiness. The only thing Dark and Stormy about the night was my preferred cocktail. The occasion? MrBaliHai was back in town. Last time we had a meet up was at Mahiki back in December. It was great to see MrBaliHai and Plep again and to meet Will Kane. Good times. Read more about our evening here.

Here are some pics of Will, MrBaliHai, Plep, Will with MrBaliHai:

Posts with the Most (Friday May 25, 2007)

This week, I started writing a new weekly series for Londonist, which is cool because I'm a fan of the site. The series is called What's for Lunch? and examines "that most pressing of daily concerns: where to go on your lunch break." I also took a trip over to the Elms Lesters Painting Rooms for Juxtapoz to take some pics of the Don't Do That group exhibition. I posted lots of pics from my recent trip to Amsterdam and even some of my own original bored air travel doodles. And, of course, I uploaded plenty of London Daily Photos for you to enjoy too.

Have a great weekend,
Tiki Chris

No mo' HoJo in Asbury Park. I'm sad to read that the gloriously "worn-out HoJo's" has been gutted. I should probably dig up some old AP pics by Emiana and me. Until then, enjoy this one by Emiana © 2007:

The national retail-development specialists are investing $150 million to $200 million to rebuild and renovate the entertainment and retail sector of the waterfront, gutted the worn-out HoJo's and created a stylish beach cafe with new lighting, flooring, bar and ceiling fans in the Fifth Avenue Pavilion. Tiki Chris Update (Friday May 18, 2007)

Lots of posts to wade through. Here are some highlights:
  • I finished up ontoTravel's Santiago de Compostela photo series and started with a new series of photos from Amsterdam.
  • ontoTravel also features a great guest post by Chris Mavergames about his expat perspective as an American living in Germany.
  • There's a new Artist Profile of fab/fun Belgian artist Spacepafpaf.
  • There's also a link to my interview for whitehot magazine with London street artist Cyclops.
  • In honor of the 60th anniversary of the Kon-Tiki voyage, I wrote a review of the corresponding documentary as part of my South Seas Cinema series.

Have a great weekend,

I like painting on the street because there's more democracy. You can just do your thing; you don't have to pay for gallery space or be curated or any of that. You just do your thing, where you like, how you like, and then it's out there. You haven't been paid and anyone can fuck it up or be inspired on the way to work by what you've made. And, once it's up, that's it: It doesn't belong to you any more.

Artist Profile: Spacepafpaf

Artist Profile: Spacepafpaf

This month's profiled artist, Spacepafpaf (alias Laurence Gonry) was born in a small town in Southern Belgium. Today, she lives and works in Brussels. She studied printmaking at the Ecole d’Art de la Cambre. Spacepafpaf works primarily in wood-cut and lino-cut printing as well as serigraphy. Her artwork has exhibited in Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Quebec.

Among her influences, she lists: "horror and fantastic cinema ( 50's to 70's), vintage publicity, humour and nonsense, UFO and creatures from outer space, jungle vegetation, old medieval painters, comics from 50's to70's, rock'n roll, tiki and exotic stuff."

I discovered Spacepafpaf's work on MySpace and immediately became a fan. Something about the way she sees the world clicks with my own view (I suppose my own list of influences would be similar to hers).

South Seas Cinema: Kon-Tiki

Welcome to South Seas Cinema, a series of posts about films set in – or pertaining to – Polynesia and the South Pacific.

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the original Kon-Tiki voyage; thus, choosing the voyage's corresponding documentary as this month's South Seas Cinema review seemed only natural. The film, Kon-Tiki, records the 1947 transpacific voyage of Norwegian scientist, Thor Heyerdahl, and his crew of four Norwegians and a Swede adventures at sea, as they set out to prove the plausibility of a hunch.

While in the Marquesas for a zoological expedition, Heyerdahl noticed that prevailing winds and ocean currents from the Americas appeared to greatly affect the islands’ flora and fauna. From this observation, he began to doubt the general consensus that Polynesians’ ancestors had taken a direct westerly route when colonizing the region. Heyerdahl suggested that, although all Pacific Rim peoples originally had hailed from Southeast Asia, the route from there to Polynesia had followed the prevailing winds and currents from Northwest America.

In 1947, Heyerdahl and his crew of four Norwegians and a Swede set out to prove his theory was plausible by sailing more than 4000 miles from Peru to the Tuamotu Islands aboard a balsawood raft constructed in prehistoric South American style. Heyerdahl dubbed the raft Kon-Tiki, after the legend of a seafaring sun-king that Heyerdahl proposed to be common among ancient Incas and early Polynesians.

So incredible was the Kon-Tiki voyage that many scientists refused to believe that it actually happened. It wasn’t until the 1951 release of the Kon-Tiki documentary about the expedition was released that academics began to take notice – along with the rest of the world. Later that year, Kon-Tiki went on to receive the Oscar for best documentary.

Although, most anthropologists continue to believe, based upon a preponderance of evidence, that Polynesia was settled from west to east, Kon-Tiki proved that Polynesia was within range of prehistoric South Americans and went on to further inform and enhance research pertaining to the settlement of the Pacific Rim. But more than these accomplishments, the expedition captured the imagination of millions.

Perhaps more than anything, Kon-Tiki (along with Heyerdahl et al’s subsequent South Pacific adventures) firmly placed the word “Tiki” into the psyche and vernacular of a generation, inspiring a plethora of products, such as dinnerware, board games and several books. Would Polynesian Pop, as we know it today, even exist if it weren’t for this plucky theorist and his crew of Scandinavian adventurers?
