Kick it into high gear with Tiki Chris!

Why is there a Tiki Chris Shift Knob on the Oddball Import website?

According to the website, this knob may be used "as a gear shift knob, hood ornament, a stand alone figure, paper weight or ?????"

Is it a compliment or an insult to have a shift knob named after me? Does this mean I'm famous? I don't even own a car. However, I must admit there is a vague resemblance. Oddball indeed!

There are zombies outside and they are looking for us ... (Z07.06)

It is difficult to say with any certainty what happened to cause the zombie infestation. I never kept up with the news before the infestation and trying to find out things after with any certainty, is almost impossible ...

Zombies invade Madrid (Z07.04)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's Groundhog Day back in the USofA. BORING!

Welcome to Zombruary! (Z07.01)

February sucks! December cheer is ancient history and New Year glee has all but whithered. Will spring ever arrive? Come this time of year, everybody seems to walk around like the living dead ... including myself! So, in honour of these interminable days of gloomy doom, I'm dedicating the whole month to the undead! Yes, here in Tiki Chris land, it's not February - it's Zombruary!

A whole February's worth of Zombie madness is also a great opportunity for me to flagrantly ignore that most insipid of holidays - Valentine's Day. I'm no fan of VD. L
uckily, Emiana ain't big on it either. However, this does mean that I'm required to be a Romeo the other 364 days of the year.

In researching (ie goofing off) for Zombruary, I came to realize that there are a lot of people interested in the zombie phenomenon. Believe me, there was no problem finding enough material. It must be said that the upcoming series of posts is in no way an exhaustive guide to zombies.

I also found that many zombie aficionados take this
zombie thing very seriously. For these zombie-philes, the question isn't What if zombies were real? but When the zombie plague begins, will I be prepared?

Creepy stuff! Just the antidote for a lousy month and a mushy holiday.

Grrr Argh,
Tiki Chris

National? I decree today be INTERNATIONAL Gorilla Suit Day!

National Gorilla Suit Day, which mysteriously falls on January 31 of each year, is perhaps the important holiday of the year. Every National Gorilla Suit Day, people of all shapes and colors around the world get their gorilla suits out of the closet, put them on and go door-to-door.

5 Good Reasons ... to be happy!

Prone to get the blues?

One little trick I've developed to combat the blues is to make a mental list of five things that - right off the top of my head - make me happy. Nothing too profound, just the first few positive things that occur to me. I find that this technique usually picks me up and results in my realizing a long list of other happy thoughts.

I was thinking that my 'five good reasons' idea might make a cool model for a blog - a platform for folks to list and share happy things with others.

So ...

Last week, I started 5GoodReasons.

Vist 5GoodReasons at http://5goodreasons.blogspot.com.

If interested in participating, just send an email to 5goodreasons@gmail.com. I’ll be happy to set you up. There are already a few contributors.

Anti-Fascism Fantasy

I finally got around to seeing Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, and, boy, am I glad I did! Shadowy and grotesque, poignant and alluring - this fairytale, set during the end of the Spanish Civil War, warns of what may happen when nature and virtue become relegated to the shadows.

Pan's Labyrinth
tells the story of Ofelia, a little girl, who - under the weight of tremendous emotional burden - retreats to a fantasy world of fairies and monsters. Perhaps her retreat is an escape from reality or - possibly - it's the only way she has to process the turbulent upheavel in her life. Played by the gifted twelve-year old Ivana Baquero, Ofelia is the embodiment of sympathy. Her fantasy world exists behind the walls and beneath the floorboards of an old, creaky house.

Was this behind the scenes fantasy world a nod to CS Lewis? Maybe if Lewis had been raised Catholic and resentful of that fact. Another obvious connection would be to Lewis Carroll's Alice, if only Carroll had grown up listening to Slayer. This is not a cutesy movie. Humankind's capacity for cruelty is held to the light for full examination.

Maribel Verdú (who also played Luisa in Y Tu Mamá También) is brilliant as Mercedes, Ofelia's bastion of hope and mercy.

I could go on. However, I think it better to direct you to a recent interview with director Del Toro on the radio show Fresh Air. Click here to access that interview, in which Del Toro explains how he came to take monsters into his heart at an early age.
