Tiki London: South London Pacific

For our upcoming Tiki London limited edition print, Tiki Racer and I came up with a list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks. Next on our list (in alphabetical order) is South London Pacific.

South London Pacific is the oldest of London's newbie Tiki bars. The masterminds behind SLP seem to have wisely anticipated the New Wave of British Tiki as well as the cocktail culture trends of the past few years. It's a fun place to drink and very popular on the weekends. SLP's kooky South Seas design is the work of Josh Collins, the same guy who tiki-fied Intoxica Records.

Tiki London: Mahiki

For our upcoming Tiki London limited edition print, Tiki Racer and I came up with a list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks. Next on our list (in alphabetical order) is Mayfair hot spot, Mahiki.

Mahiki is London's newest Tiki bar - and also it's trendiest - attracting the likes of Madonna, Paris Hilton, and Prince Harry. And, like the great tiki drinks establishments of yore, Mahiki has a beautifully illustrated drinks menu designed by Tiki Racer.

Not only is Notting Hill's Intoxica Records a great place to shop for vintage vinyl, according to its owner it's also “the only record shop in the world decked out in the Polynesian Tiki style.”

Meet Up with Cyclops and Sweet Toof (Juxtapoz)

Curiosity and vanity getting the best of me, I agreed to the meet up. We convened near an over ground train station, Cyclops lugging a beat up ladder and Sweet Toof pulling a pregnant, paint splattered shopping trolley. After a brief hello, we trekked over to a nearby water tower in a derelict, overgrown lot beside a canal. According to Sweet Toof, the roughly 30 foot tall tank had been "asking for a lick of paint for a long time."

Tiki London: Cuming Museum

For our upcoming Tiki London limited edition print, Tiki Racer and I came up with a list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks. Next on our list (in alphabetical order) is the Cuming Museum.

The little known Cuming Museum, located in South London, is home to a number of objects brought to England on the three Pacific voyages of Captain Cook. Tikis, Hawaiian feather cloaks and more - along with the rest of the Cuming's exotic and arcane collections - make this small museum an excellent off-the-beaten-path destination.

Tiki London: British Museum

For our upcoming Tiki London limited edition print, Tiki Racer and I came up with a list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks. Next on our list (in alphabetical order) is the British Museum.

Why the British Museum? Well, with 45,000 Polynesian artefacts on premise, including the below pictured moai Hoa Hakananai'a and the Picasso-inspiring A'a, the British Museum is a perfect place to check out the real McCoys that influenced Polynesian Pop and Tiki style.

Tiki London: Black Pearl Boutique

For our upcoming Tiki London limited edition print, Tiki Racer and I came up with a list of London's 10 Most Tiki Landmarks. First on the list (in alphabetical order) is Black Pearl Boutique.

Black Pearl Boutique at Kingly Court (just off Carnaby Street) is a haven of rockabilly jewellery, vintage 1950’s clothing, burlesque corsets, and accessories, providing Tiki enthusiasts with a Polynesian oasis of tropical décor in the middle of central London’s retail jungle. Upon first entering Black Pearl, shoppers are whisked away to a tropic isle via the shop’s “Polynesian Tiki style,” which, according to Owner Fiona Deffenbaugh, “evokes the spirit of 1950s Tiki bars,” and sets it apart from the multitude of shops around Carnaby Street.

Coming Soon: Tiki London

With the London Luau coming up in mid June, Tiki Racer and I thought it would be a worthwhile endeavour to research and document some of London's Tiki landmarks for ourselves.

Blazing through this urban jungle, mingling with its restless natives, and diligently making copious notes of our explorations and discoveries, we were able to plot and map our course, resulting in the upcoming limited edition print: Tiki London.


Over the next several days, we'll use the Tiki Chris blog to point out some of the highlights of London's Tiki landscape. Make sure to check back for more details about our Tiki London project as well as for images from our limited edition print. Until then, here's a teeny weeny sneak peek:

Blogger Meet-Up at Trailer Happiness

It was a dark and stormy night ... No, actually, it was a pleasant sunny late afternoon when I met up with a few other bloggers at Notting Hill's Trailer Happiness. The only thing Dark and Stormy about the night was my preferred cocktail. The occasion? MrBaliHai was back in town. Last time we had a meet up was at Mahiki back in December. It was great to see MrBaliHai and Plep again and to meet Will Kane. Good times. Read more about our evening here.

This week, I started writing a new weekly series for Londonist, which is cool because I'm a fan of the site. The series is called What's for Lunch? and examines "that most pressing of daily concerns: where to go on your lunch break." I also took a trip over to the Elms Lesters Painting Rooms for Juxtapoz to take some pics of the Don't Do That group exhibition. I posted lots of pics from my recent trip to Amsterdam and even some of my own original bored air travel doodles. And, of course, I uploaded plenty of London Daily Photos for you to enjoy too.

The national retail-development specialists are investing $150 million to $200 million to rebuild and renovate the entertainment and retail sector of the waterfront, gutted the worn-out HoJo's and created a stylish beach cafe with new lighting, flooring, bar and ceiling fans in the Fifth Avenue Pavilion. The project was completed in less than three months.

A heady donation for the the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford

Museum offered head for shrinking
An artist is offering to donate his own head to an Oxford museum - if a collection of shrunken heads has to be returned to South America.
