Artist Profile: James Jessop


Lately, I've been running around a bit with artist James Jessop. Cool guy, brilliant artist and - being that it's time for the 31 Days of Halloween Madness - an excellent choice for this month's Artist Profile. In fact, it was when I attended the opening of his Night of the Demon exhibition that I realized that I ought to feature him this month. That exhibition, which just ended about a week ago, really caught my eye (and grabbed my imagination) with its massive paintings inspired by "gaudy B-movie imagery and sleazy paperback covers from the sixties." Jessop's love of old school Bronx style graffiti was evident too, making for a unique mix of energetic and exciting works that are fun and somewhat dangerous (like a good horror movie).

James studied painting at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1999. Among the galleries which have shown his work are Saatchi Gallery London, Rockwell and Sartorial Contemporary Art. In 2008, James will have solo exhibitions at Thomas Cohn in Sao Palo Brazil and Galleri Tom Christoffersen in Copenhagen. James is represented by Sartorial Contemporary Art in London.

He did a bang up job with his contribution to the Halloween Skull Mask Project too and seems to have an uncanny knack for popping up here and there in my blogs.

How many Space Invader mosaics are in your neighbourhood? Offhand, I can think of five within a minute's walk of my flat and countless more throughout London. Of course, with his brilliantly simple - and often precariously placed - pixelated mosaic tiles adhered to walls in virtually every major city across this planet, it's almost surprising to not happen upon his work.

Skele-Flamingos (31DoHM07)

I just came across this Tiki Central thread about some wonderfully ridiculous low brow Halloween lawn ornaments called Skele-Flamingos. These monstrously tacky birds are the product of Pink Inc, "a new company with a trained staff and a history in manufacturing and selling Pink Flamingos." Brilliant. According to the TC post, "painting the actual bones and such on the samples" was the work of TCer Tipsy McStagger.

Frightening Week in Review (Friday October 5, 2007)

Welcome to (r)October and the first week in this year's 31 Days of Halloween Madness. The Halloween Skull Mask Project is underway and so far the submissions (by BlasFamous, Atomic Tony Tiki, Ann-Caroline Breig, and Alone) are phenomenal. Keep checkin' back for a new mask from a different artist each day of this month.

In non-Halloween (but equally frightening) news, the intrepid Pint Champion braved the Furries v Klingons Bowling competition in Atlanta to bring us some photos. I got more photos (and video!!!) from PC than I've had time to post. Hopefully, I'll get around to posting the rest soon. Over at ontoTravel, I continued with my Milan photo series (with still more to come).

Taschen's Iconic Halloween is an Eye Candy Treat (31DoHM07)

I really love the Taschen Icons book series. If I had the money - and the room - I'd probably buy every title in the series, which ranges from Alchemy to Web Design with all sorts of image rich topics in between. But since I don't have that kind of money or even the space for the books I already own, I must settle for a few of my more preferred topics. Among them is Taschen's Halloween, "a nostalgic tribute to one of America's favorite holidays." At 192 pages of vintage Halloween graphics (masks, adverts, old photos, etc), I can leaf through this book and come across something different almost every time. At first I was annoyed by the lack of words (none) but now I appreciate it even more. A great bedside treat to inspire spooky dreams.
